Profile:The Sun newspaper covers the towns of Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and Canal Point, which are on the southern shores of Lake Okeechobee. Located on the edge of the Everglades, the area is famous for its rich, black soil, called "muck" or "Black Gold". This fertile soil produces abundant crops, such as sugarcane, corn, radishes, lettuce and rice.

Lake Okeechobee is known as the Bass Capital of the World and draws sports fishermen from around the world to fish in the second largest freshwater
lake in the country. The residents of "The Glades" live within 40 miles of the major shopping hub of West Palm Beach and 60 miles from Miami.

The Sun newspaper is the only local newspaper serving this area and residents rely on the newspaper’s coverage of the local news, sports and social events. Advertisers take advantage of the fact that The Sun is part of the South Lake newspapers, which includes Clewiston News and Glades County Democrat. The South Lake papers, with an 8,000 circulation, has a coverage area from Canal Point to Buckhead Ridge, joining the Glades area into one community.

Our Purpose The Sun is owned by a unique trust that enables this newspaper to pursue a mission of journalistic service to the citizens of the community. Since no dividends are paid, the company is able to thrive on profit margins below industry standards. All after-tax surpluses are reinvested in Independent’s mission of journalistic service, commitment to the ideals of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and support of the community’s deliberation of public issues.
