PROFILE:
The
Journal, published since 1915, reflects southern Kent
County's small town charm and bedrock traditional values
within communities that are aggressively embracing
modern educational systems and diverse entertainment
attractions.
The
area is defined by the Lake Forest School District,
which includes the rapidly evolving City of Harrington
as well as the towns of Bowers Beach, Felton, Frederica
and Viola. Besides being destinations themselves with
many local attractions and services, these towns are
mushrooming target communities for the regional shopping
hub of Greater Dover to the north, steadily expanding
Greater Milford to the east, and the burgeoning expanse
of Sussex County and the beach areas to the south.
The
City of Harrington represents the heart of the Lake
Forest School District. Though a small town, it boasts a
busy downtown retail shopping area with four museums
proudly celebrating its railroad, farming and canning
heritage.
Here are the Delaware State Fair grounds that celebrate
the importance of agriculture to the area; the
multimillion dollar Harrington Raceway, which is the
oldest continuously operating harness-racing track in
the country; the state's Midway Slots that is a
gambling palace of over 1,300 slot
machines; and, here is the new Centre Ice Rink, which
provides skating instructional programs, participation
in the amateur US Hockey League, and special figure
skating programs and performances.
The
Journal pays close attention to its coverage of the
entire Lake Forest School District, which is one of the
fastest-growing, future-oriented school districts in the
state. The
Lake Forest "Spartans" sports teams enjoy strong support
from the local citizenry. The school district's
comprehensive athletic program is rated in the top sixth
of the country for athletic performance. The district
boasts a stadium complex and houses the only
school indoor pool in southern Delaware where swimming
instruction and competition is offered.
Our Purpose…
