PROFILE: Serving the Eastern Shore since 1877, The Dorchester Banner, which publishes twice weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays, dominates the market in Maryland's largest county, Dorchester County. The Eastern Shore Banner, a free publication which publishes on Fridays, serves readers in Easton in Talbot County.  The papers are located in Cambridge, the center of Dorchester County's population as well as its business and cultural activity. The Dorchester Banner is the newspaper of record for Dorchester County. It is clearly the dominant medium in the market and the area's main source of news and information.

The city of Cambridge is a deepwater port, offering direct access to ocean-going ships and coastal freighters. Almost half the work force engages in manufacturing. The remainder are primarily employed in retail, agriculture and seafood harvesting and processing. Nestled in the corner of the Delmarva Peninsula where the Choptank River opens to the Chesapeake Bay, Cambridge is within easy reach of Baltimore (86 miles), Philadelphia (185 miles), Washington, D.C. (97 miles) and Ocean City, MD (69 miles).

The city of Easton "the 8th Best Small Town in America" is an arts and cultural center with a population of over 14,000 individuals. Easton, the seat of government for Talbot County, serves as a regional hub for a 25 mile radius with population of approximately 160,000. With over 600 miles of waterfront, Talbot County is proximate to the Baltimore/Washington, DC corridor, yet retains acres of hardwood forests, grain producing fields, and seafood processing facilities which continue to contribute to the county's economic base.

Cambridge and Easton represent classic Chesapeake Bay country -- a land of watermen and country estates, beautiful rivers and inlets. It is developing into a tourist and recreation center with a growing retail base.

Our Purpose… The Dorchester Banner and Eastern Shore Banner are owned by a unique trust that enables this newspaper to pursue a mission of journalistic service to the citizens of the community. Since no dividends are paid, the company is able to thrive on profit margins below industry standards. All after-tax surpluses are reinvested in Independent’s mission of journalistic service, commitment to the ideals of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and support of the community’s deliberation of public issues.
