Profile:The newspaper covers several cities and communities within the county including the City of Moore Haven, Lakeport, Muse, Buckhead Ridge, Palmdale, Ortona and home to the Brighten Seminole Indian Reservation.

James A. Moore, a developer from Seattle, started Moore Haven, the first real town in the Everglades, in 1915. He bought the "Henderson Heirs" tract of 98,000 acres at the southwestern corner of Lake Okeechobee. At the Flat Top Cypress, where Three-Mile Canal joins the lake, he laid out the town of Moore Haven. A power plant was built and Moore Haven became known for its produce, sugar cane and catfish industries. Soon after, Moore Haven was named county seat of Glades County.

In 1992, disaster struck in the form of the "Big Fire", followed by floods in 1922 and a devastating hurricane in September of 1928. The catfish industry died, but Moore Haven survived.

Today, still supported by its cattle, sugar cane, fishing, citrus and produce industries. Tourism and sport fisherman have also discovered Moore Haven. Glades County has 880 students in its school system in which there are one elementary school and one middle/senior high school.

The Glades County Democrat covers all city and county government, school board system, sports and community events. The first weekend of March, Chalo Nitka "Day of the Big Bass" Festival takes place. It features a pet parade, haystack scramble, small fry fishing contest and 4-H steer show. The newly crowned Chalo Nitka Queen joins a colorful parade of floats and marching bands, Seminole Indian crafts and food, as well as rodeo music and clogging, round out the activities.

The Glades County Democrat is part of the South Lake newspapers, which includes Clewiston News and The Sun. The South Lake papers, with an 8,000 circulation, has a coverage area from Canal Point to Buckhead Ridge, joining the Glades area into one community.
