Profile: Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert – named for William M. Gilbert, a homesteader – is a family-oriented town and is the fastest growing community in the nation. Gilbert’s population of 215,000 has doubled every five years since 1980. Its planning area encompasses more than 76 square miles in Maricopa County. The Gilbert Independent covered the area for more than 29 years and, after closing in August 2007 for a combination of factors from residential sprawl to competition and shifting advertising trends, has restarted in January 2010 in zoned editions. The newspaper will serve readers and businesses, and will distribute 15,000 newspapers each week. Distribution will be rotated to a different delivery zone every week. Over the course of four weeks, the Independent will reach 60,000 different homes in Gilbert.

Our Purpose The Gilbert Independent is owned by a unique trust that enables this newspaper to pursue a mission of journalistic service to the citizens of the community. Since no dividends are paid, the company is able to thrive on profit margins below industry standards. All after-tax surpluses are reinvested in Independent’s mission of journalistic service, commitment to the ideals of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and support of the community’s deliberation of public issues.
