Profile: Once a farm town - named after Dr. A.J. Chandler, the first veterinary surgeon appointed to serve the Arizona Territory – Chandler is now one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. Its planning area encompasses more than 71 square miles in Maricopa County. Agriculture is still important, but Chandler is now known for its high-tech industry. The Chandler Independent covered the area for more than 22 years and, after closing in August 2007 for a combination of factors from residential sprawl to competition and shifting advertising trends, has restarted in January 2010 in zoned editions. The newspaper will distribute 15,000 newspapers each week, rotating to a different delivery zone every week. Over the course of four weeks, the Independent will reach 60,000 different homes in Chandler, reaching some of the most popular areas within the city, including: Sun Lakes, North Chandler, East Chandler and the area known as Ocotillo.

Our Purpose The Chandler Independent is owned by a unique trust that enables this newspaper to pursue a mission of journalistic service to the citizens of the community. Since no dividends are paid, the company is able to thrive on profit margins below industry standards. All after-tax surpluses are reinvested in Independent’s mission of journalistic service, commitment to the ideals of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and support of the community’s deliberation of public issues.
